ILA Supports the PRIVACY Act

Jul 17, 2026 | Legislative Alert

The Institute for Legislative Analysis (ILA) supports the PRIVACY Act (H.R. 9716; Rep. Keith Self, R-TX) because it protects Americans’ constitutional right to privacy by preventing federal agencies from circumventing Fourth Amendment protections through warrantless surveillance. As introduced, this legislation would limit federal law enforcement access to state and local mass surveillance data without a warrant, restrict data retention, and prohibit future federal funding for certain surveillance technologies. ILA commends Congressman Keith Self for introducing this important legislation.
